Iron Infusion
Iron rich foods:
Best sources of iron (well absorbed by the body):
- Meats: beef, lamb, chicken, turkey, pork
- Fish and shellfish
- Offal (e.g., liver, kidney)
Good sources of non-haem iron (less well absorbed):
- Wholegrain cereals and bread
- Iron-fortified breakfast cereals
- Beans, lentils, chickpeas, dried peas
- Green leafy vegetables (e.g., spinach, broccoli)
- Dried fruit (e.g., apricots, prunes)
- Eggs
- Peanut butter and nuts (note: whole nuts not recommended for children under 5) .
To improve iron absorption:
Pair iron-rich foods with vitamin C-rich foods like:
- Citrus fruits (e.g., oranges, mandarins)
- Berries, kiwi fruit, strawberries
- Capsicum, tomatoes, broccoli, cabbage
