Iron Infusion

Iron rich foods:

Best sources of iron (well absorbed by the body):

  • Meats: beef, lamb, chicken, turkey, pork
  • Fish and shellfish
  • Offal (e.g., liver, kidney)

Good sources of non-haem iron (less well absorbed):

  • Wholegrain cereals and bread
  • Iron-fortified breakfast cereals
  • Beans, lentils, chickpeas, dried peas
  • Green leafy vegetables (e.g., spinach, broccoli)
  • Dried fruit (e.g., apricots, prunes)
  • Eggs
  • Peanut butter and nuts (note: whole nuts not recommended for children under 5) .

To improve iron absorption: 

Pair iron-rich foods with vitamin C-rich foods like:

  •  Citrus fruits (e.g., oranges, mandarins)
  • Berries, kiwi fruit, strawberries
  • Capsicum, tomatoes, broccoli, cabbage

You will need to schedule a GP appointment to confirm your eligibility for an iron infusion. The cost of the iron infusion is $110.00.
